Do what you love, love what you do!

As I’ve been nearing the end of my degree at university, I’ve been questioning myself, in terms of my readiness for the teaching profession. Am I happy with the level of knowledge that I have? Will my students really gain the experiences and passion for the outdoors that I have?

Outdoor Education in Singapore didn’t appear as those it could ignite this passion for the environment. To me, it seemed to revolve only around recreation, which I used to think meant students would only enjoy the activity, and not gain a deeper connection with the outdoors.

As time goes by…

Isn’t it funny how easily my mind has changed.. Within the first couple of days of my visit to Singapore I was and still am, absolutely blown away with the amazing Cloud Forest, Flower Dome and the Super Trees.

It was so interesting to see all of Singapore’s finest and spectacular gardens on display. At this point in time of the trip, I felt that I was heavily involved in the ‘tourist’ mindset. I was asking myself… are all of these attractions just for show? Which is what Lexie has also talked about in her blog, that I found interesting to read her thoughts, similarly we shared some mutual ideas.

Natural Wonder…

Nature…what is it, and what do we mean when we use the term nature or natural environment? The context and meaning of these words is no doubt different to each person you meet and each country you visit.

My mind automatically invisages a natural environment as being expansive, wild and practically untouched – nature in it’s rawest form – of which I am so used to back home within Australia. Prior to coming to Singapore, despite having done some research, and chatting with folks who had been to Singapore before, it had never crossed my mind how such a small and urban country would be able to incorporate and value the minimal nature that they had.

The Flip Side of Nature

I have chosen a selection of photos that I feel highlight the contrasts between these two natural environments of the Super Trees and Central Catchment Reserve. The Super Trees are a self sufficient tourist spectacular demonstrating sustainable human made initiatives; whilst the Central Catchment Reserve is a natural wonderland that contains human made features to create accessibility and decrease impact.

Although both natural environments are very different, they allow individuals to connect to nature on different levels through different mediums.

One of my group members taking a break

What an amazing experience! Today Ty, Lachy, Matt and I guided our group through the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Taking the time to walk through the catchment and connect with nature was a nice change of pace. Today was the groups first chance of experiencing Singapore’s wildlife in a natural environment. Traveling around in small packs , frequently snacking and sharing food I would not blame the locals for thinking the Catchment had a new species of Monkey passing through.

Big Yellow Taxi – Joni Mitchell (performed by Counting Crows)

They took all the trees
Put ’em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see ’em

As a kid growing up hearing this song I enjoyed it and loved the boppy fun beat that gets stuck in your head. I also loved the ‘quirky’ lyrics that described a world different to the one I live in in Australia. A world where the trees were all cut down, so much so that people had to pay ‘a $1.50 to see them” in museums. I remember having conversations with my sisters about a world that looked like this, we just couldn’t imagine.
