Summary:

The day will encompass an opportunity to explore Palau Ubin and all the historic features it possesses. The group will travel via primarily by bicycle in an aim to gain a greater understanding of what Singapore was like prior to urbanisation.

The following locations will provide key stops whilst on Palau Ubin;

  • Sungei Mamam; One of two major rivers that run through Pulau Ubin. Mamam beach is situated on the North-Eastern side of the island at the river mouth and has facilities such as picnic benches and a toilet.

Introduction:

The purpose of this day within the context of the trip is to provide the group with an opportunity to explore Palau Ubin from a different perspective and gain knowledge and understanding of historical, cultural and economical differences to usual Australian lifestyles.

Aims & Objectives:

  • To compare and contrast mainland Singapore and Pulau Ubin – in regards to integration of recreational opportunities and development, urbanisation and the importance of the environment in the eyes of the locals.
  • Continue to shape and develop understandings and knowledge about an area of Singapore, and it’s people – through exploration and personal discovery.
  • To gain an understanding of the ecological significance of Pulau Ubin and the importance of its environmental resources.

Linking to the Purpose of the Trip:

Exploring the limited natural environment to gain an understanding of what Singapore was like prior to rapid urbanisation and populous growth.

Each part of the day (i.e the different activities during the day):

  • Train

  • Dinner.

Description of each activity:

Bike ride around Palau Ubin.

Proposed Route

  • The proposed route for the bike ride around Pulau Ubin is a loop of the island that is maximum 18km in distance (which is highlighted in yellow on the above map).
  • The ride begins in the village where we ride up Jalan Ubin track until we get to Jalan Durian. From there we ride out to Chet Jawa Information Kiosk and Visitor Centre.
  • The ride continues on from Chet Jawa onto the Jalan Mamam track to Mamam beach and the mouth of Sungei Mamam. As we travel south back towards Jalan Ubin track we pass the Fish Farm, then taking the Jalan Batu Ubin track until we hit the Jalan Noordin track.
  • We follow this track north up and then back again to take in the sights of the Fish Farm and Sungei Besar. We then follow Jalan Batu Ubin track until we get to Jalan Jelutong which we follow over the Jelutong Bridge.
  • We then follow the Jalan Endut Senin track, making numerous side trips to the Temple and Puaka Hill, all the way to Katam Mountain Bike Park.
  • For those feeling adventurous, the Blue Diamond track makes for a fun 2.2km joy ride.
  • After the Bike Park we then return to the village to return our bikes.
  • This loop has numerous opportunities for side trips and stops at the multiple huts and points of interest along the route!

  • Pasir Panjang > Harbour Front > (NE) Outtrum Park > (EW) Tampines 45minutes > (BUS 29) Changi Point > Ferry.

Gear/equipment:

  • Bicycle / Helmet

  • Snacks
  • Backpack

Safety considerations:

  • Ensure all participants are wearing helmets.
  • Ensure all participants are consuming adequate levels of water and food throughout the trip.
  • Ensure there are adequate breaks and rest stops to cater for all ability and energy levels.
  • Undertake a check over of all bikes prior to leaving, including; breaks, tires and bell.
  • BYO water as water is not consumable outside the main village.
  • Cycling in Pulau Ubin can be dangerous and people have been known to be injured or killed at different hotspots around the island, check out this link for the dangerous points around the tracks!
  • Pulau Ubin is a very popular destination for tourists and locals, meaning there are plenty of bikes moving around, ensure courtesy when travelling by sticking to one side of the track to avoid collisions.

Budget:

  • Bike: $8 per bike. Different stores around the village.
  • Ferry: $2.50 per person
  • Bus: $1.40
  • Train: $2.70 per person
  • Total: $14.60

Food:

  • Snack to be purchased day prior at students discretion.
  • Lunch will be purchased from Pulau Ubin Main Village.
  • Dinner will be purchased from Changi Village Food Centre.

Processing:

Roses and Thorns:

Description:

Sit in a circle, and rotate around the group by saying one thing about the game you enjoyed ‘the rose’ and one thing that you found challenging ‘the thorn’.

Safety Considerations:

  • Ensure students are not exposed to too much sunlight and have sunscreen and appropriate clothing on.
  • Establish a friendly and respectful environment so that students feel comfortable. If students feel uncomfortable stop the game.
  • Ensure a no-put down environment with zero tolerance for this rule.
