I look forward to reading your comments below. And remember, there is no wrong answer..

The Ferrari and the Hawker Centre.

The Pasir Panjang Hawker Centre  has been our little haven for delicious cultural dishes, nice and close to our accommodation. While I was eating dinner there, I noticed a young child sleeping on a chair and the way they were set up led me to believe that it was a regular thing and Mum and Dad were perhaps working in the Hawker Centre. The thing I have noticed about the people at the Hawker Centres is firstly, they are very friendly and secondly, they work very hard for long periods in tough cramped conditions.

Innovation and Vision…

Singapore…..wow! What an amazing place. There is so much to see and be done, but so little time to do it…

Upon arrival it was quickly evident that this was a country where innovation and vision are at the forefront of the society. Not only in terms of the engineering and structural design of the buildings, but also in the way the country has embraced and incorporated nature within the largely urban society.

Completely Mystified

Its busy, bustling and brutally hot! The city is constantly stirring the people from here to there, its ever expanding in size and knowledge; It’s a place where the trains never stop and the train drivers don’t take lunch breaks. We run from train, to train, to train, to train, to train, to bus, ducking and weaving our way through a sea of people. Land is gold in this place, it is utilised to its full potential, they have even expanded their country by importing sand around the edges and creating islands!

Is this as wild as it gets?

Finally the day had fallen upon me! Some up close and personal real nature, none of these man-made attractions. The so-called ‘Green Lung’ and all its beauty!

After visiting Singapore’s Central Catchment Nature Reserve, some thoughts have sparked in my mind as I try to understand more about the human-nature relationships in this foreign country.

Singapore – Discovered

Singapore – Discovered

Although I’d done my research,
I knew not what I’d feel,
When I finally got off the plane,
It was all just so surreal.

Creating Singapore – Yes We Can!

Wow, wow and wow. This place is INCREDIBLE! They have domes with forests and flowers growing in them, and trees which are 20 meters tall, made of metal and decorated with plants, are self sufficient AND they have their own sound and light show which is VERY spectacular.

Is it only for the looks?

Awesome. This is undeniably the word of the day, however, it still does not capture the experience each and every one of us had today.

I went into the day knowing we were going to see some pretty fascinating places but wanting to know how they connected to nature and more specifically their link to nature education. I came into the day thinking ‘are the Cloud Forest, Flower Dome and Supertrees simply for show?’ They do look extremely pretty after all. I am the first to admit my struggles to take in lots of information, however, I found it difficult to be in places full of thousands, if not, millions of different plants and wonder ‘why have these places been made?’ and ‘what do they do?’

Restoration, reclamation, what does it cost?

It can be easy visiting a country for the first time and be swept up in the moment, exploring a place so foreign to our own and being swept away by the surrounding culture is a wondrous experience and as many will comment the place, people and culture are all beautiful. However of the many questions framing our experience one has rose prominently amidst the experiences that I have partaken in over these past two days and shaped my thinking: How can urbanization be married with nature in a harmonious relationship? And therefore allow the establishment of a connection between nature and the people who inhabit the area.

Humidity, Food and Super Trees, Super Trees!

From the moment we walked out of the airport we were met by somewhat of a punch in the face by the 35-degree temperatures with the humidity at 95%. After a long day on the wheels I have become some what acclimatised but as a result have a ripping blood blister.
