‘Learn in’ or ‘take away’? Take away please!

We get to go to Singapore?!!! And have the opportunity to lead our peers for a day with activities of our choice?! Sounds too easy to be true doesn’t it?

It wasn’t all smooth moving in Singapore, the opportunity and experience of leading my peers was on occasions a tricky one – however one that I’m very thankful for and hope to ‘take away’ many key learning’s surrounding facilitation!

You look familiar Singapore – do I know you?

The reflection journey may soon be over in terms of writing blog posts for this website… However! This trip is something that I will be able to look back on fondly and seek to draw more and more meaning as my journey as an outdoor educator progresses!!!

This post specifically relates to similarities and differences between how nature is utilised by Singaporeans and Australians and also how outdoor education in Singapore develops ‘nature’ as an outcome in its programs and how this differs to outdoor and environmental education in Australia.

‘Generation Y-Fi’ & ‘Quality over Quantity?’

Singapore – You have done it again!!! Two weeks of learning is beginning to really sink in and more specifically my awareness of the potential negative influences of technology to the interpersonal skills of the next generation. Additionally, I’m exploring the ideas surrounding Singapore’s key Outdoor Education outcomes and whether they are achieving fewer outcomes but in a more effective way.

“I am Singapore!”

In Australian culture, we have a number of different avenues to enhance ‘Personal Development’ and ‘Resilience’ in young people. Whether this is through schooling (including Outdoor & Environmental Education), sport or the many other leadership opportunities provided to the next generation… However, in Singapore, not only do they provide similar learning opportunities but I believe they also extend this development process one step further…

Central Catchment ‘UnCOVERed’

What a day!! Day four of our journey marked the day where I, alongside Lachy Cohen, Jack Finegan and Matt O’Shea facilitated 17 peers and two lecturers through Singapore’s Central Catchment Nature Reserve.

Having the opportunity to lead a group of peers in such a new and beautiful environment and aiming to promote their learning about self, others, culture and nature was just as much of a challenging concept as it was an exciting one.

City meets Paradise!!!

Hello and welcome to spectacular Singapore!!! My name is Ty and I look forward to sharing my experiences in this wonderful city with you over the next two weeks!

Upon arrival in Singapore, I was amazed with the cleanliness of the city and friendliness of the local people. I was fascinated by the architecture and innovation of buildings – which are never far from view.
