A ship in a harbour is safe, but this is not what a ship is built for

Outdoor Education in Singapore they said! Let’s go exploring! Let’s see how Singapore includes Outdoor Education in such an urbanised country! This is how my journey to Singapore began. During the planning stage of our trip I did not know what to expect of Singapore or how Outdoor Education was going to be included. I was basically blind about Singapore until I was able to see for myself how Outdoor Education was included in schools and in everyday life.

I might be small now, but I still have many years to grow.

Looking back on my experience in Singapore I realise I have not only grown as a person but have learnt so much more about facilitation and my leadership skills. Dowd (2005) talks about how he had a bad experience during one of his adventures and how he learnt from his mistakes. From my journey in Singapore I can relate to Dowd because I didn’t have a very good first half day; I felt unorganised and didn’t know what was happening. However, as my next facilitation day was a week later I had time to ensure all the planning was organised and that I knew how the day was going to run. I felt in control with the day and therefore my confidence was higher. I now can compare the difference, and feel the difference within myself, when a day is completely organised and runs smoothly as to when it is unorganised and plans are changing constantly.

Don’t let a bite get you down

My facilitation day was spilt into two half days. Confusing I know. However with changes happening left right and centre with our first day, Will, Joel, Kieryn and I felt we were good at adapting to the time changes, transport changes and how long we were spending on our activity. By all of us I mean the boys. However, with their solid support, their laid back attitude and their calming reassurance I eventually stopped stressing out (after it was over). A Drop In The Ocean

I decided to write a song to A Drop In The Ocean by Rob Pope. This songs reflects where I was located when I was reflecting on my learning from the day. I was located on the east coast of Singapore at the end of our windsurfing session, and I was just a drop in the ocean whilst on my board. When reading this song it will be beneficial if you have the song playing in the background if you do not know the song lyrics well.

Tembusu Tree’s Time

I used to have friends
All different in size,
Climbing this way and that,
Just to have fun.

Where did they go?
What did I do?
I thought I was friendly
And easy to get along with.
I don’t know where I went so wrong.

But First Let Me Take A Selfie

Left, right, up, down. People checking Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter just to ensure they don’t miss out on the latest social media news. What happened to the olden days where books were being read or the train was so loud from conversations you couldn’t hear yourself think? Is this really what is happening to society? Can we not communicate between each other unless we use technology?
