Dont cry because its over, smile because it happened

“Don’t CRY because its over, SMILE because it happened!” (Unknown, n.d.)

I know what your thinking… doesn’t he normally start off with a Dr Seuss quote? Some of you may even be thinking ‘that is a Dr Seuss 77292741_ec5b47243b_oquote…’ but heres the thing, it’s not. In fact he never wrote this at all. It has simply been associated with him due to the fact it sounds like something he would write, an assumption. My old man used to tell me that you should never ‘assume’ anything. His reasoning for this was that ‘it makes an ass out of you and me‘ and in my experience these words have held true.

Assuming that you know how other people think, what they want, how they will react. That your plan is flawless or even the assumption that because you know all of these things.. nothing could go wrong. Your being an ass, and you are wrong, but we all do it.

Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple

“Sometimes the questions are COMPLICATED and the answers are SIMPLE” (Dr. Seuss, n.d)

Compare and contrast how Outdoor and Environmental Education (OEE) is run in Australia and Singapore. Focussing on an underlying theme and discuss in relation to the literature.. Sounds like a mouth full doesn’t it. And how does one even start to compare the two? I mean they are both so different right? It would be like comparing apples and oranges for lack of a better analogy. I mean Singapore can fit into Australia over 11,000 times.. and Australia has completely different ecosystems and environments to that found in Singapore. Therefore our Outdoor and Environmental Education has to be completely different right?…. wrong.

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to get better, it’s not.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to get better, it’s not.” (Dr. Seuss, 1998)

This quote is one of my favourites. It reminds me that when I care about something, I need to act on it. Because if I do not, unless there is another person just like me, there will be no change.

Or at least thats what it meant to me before Singapore…

Travel with Fin, a man tall and thin.

Travel with Fin, a man tall and thin.
In a place full of buildings, he finds beauty within.
Surrounded by those who look different to him.
Fin begins to realise that they are his kin.

Fin’s travels started as he stepped off the plane
Ducking his head to avoid the pain.
His first thoughts were “wow this place just isn’t for me”
“Ducking and squeezing, too crowded you see”.

I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues

“I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongue” (Dr. Suess, 1998)

Eight days, eight days spent in a foreign environment surrounded by buildings, people, traffic and trees. Trees that look familiar yet are not the same. I tried to come into this trip with an open mind and see Singapore without any filters in place. However this proved to be difficult as I myself have a strong connection with what I believe to be a healthy natural environment. But who is to say that my views on nature are correct? Or that they transfer to the Singapore environment?

One of my group members taking a break

What an amazing experience! Today Ty, Lachy, Matt and I guided our group through the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Taking the time to walk through the catchment and connect with nature was a nice change of pace. Today was the groups first chance of experiencing Singapore’s wildlife in a natural environment. Traveling around in small packs , frequently snacking and sharing food I would not blame the locals for thinking the Catchment had a new species of Monkey passing through.
